MARCH 2025
What is changing?
Currently, a third-party contactless CAN Bus reader, the CANGOclick product from CANGO, is used to enable the MiX 4000 OBC to read CAN Bus messages. However, quality issues have been identified with this product.
This product notice is the directive to all regional offices to immediately transition from the CANGOclick product to the new Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor.
The new Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor was made compatible with the MiX 4000 and launched in November 2024. Its deployment was initially pending depletion of CANGOclick stock. The CANGOclick product quality issue, however, has resulted in the acceleration of the transition to the new Powerfleet product.
Note that the Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor has been used by the legacy Powerfleet onboard computers for several years and is proven in the field.
The new Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor is available for order through the global operations team and is available in Salesforce for quoting.
Investigation
We have observed two distinct failures with the CANGOclick product:
- Hardware failure - Most concerning is that some devices experience out-of-box or premature complete hardware failure. This results in the device placing a short circuit on the +5V supply of the MiX 4000 and drawing the maximum current allowed. Over time, this often results in the CANGOclick device becoming hot enough to melt the glue used to assemble the PCB into its housing.
- CAN BUS message loss - Due to design limitations, on some vehicles, the device's tolerances, vehicle wiring (size and insulation type) and CAN bus load, can result in missed messages broadcast on CAN. This leads to inaccurate data, causing false events and/or missing events on our platform, e.g. brief dropout in CAN speed resulting in missing Tacho data and false Harsh Braking/Harsh Acceleration events triggering.
Findings and root cause
The root cause investigation with the supplier is in progress. However, to minimize customer impact and reduce the burden on our regional service delivery and support teams, the decision has been made to immediately transition to the new Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor.
Corrective Action
- Regional teams to place orders for the new Powerfleet Contactless Adaptor:
- Part number: 715-50501
- Part description: Contactless Adaptor MiX 4000 Kit
- When stock of the new Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor is available in-region, immediately stop installation using the CANGOclick product (part number P0053MT) and begin using the Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor (P/N 715-50501)
- The Powerfleet Contactless CAN Adaptor has been configured to plug into the MiX 4000 main harness (MP10 or MP22).
