When privacy mode is selected on the DriveMate, the script invokes the full privacy mode as determined by the onboard computer (OBC). The script also sets a flag to remember the button state to ensure that DriveMate remains in privacy mode even if the power is removed from the OBC.
However, when the ignition is turned back on, DriveMate will remind the driver, via a double beep for 10 seconds, to press the center button to remain in private mode if required. If the button is not pressed then DriveMate will set the mode back to default business mode.
If the button is pressed then DriveMate will remain in privacy mode and the button event is recorded as button state 3.
The operator must deliberately move to one of the other modes, through button presses, in order to exit privacy mode.
Note : During the reminder period DriveMate will set the button state to 4 until DriveMate sets it back to either 1 or 3 depending on the driver response.
See the example:
- A to B – at ignition-on, the trip will start in business mode as this is the default state set by DriveMate. All event and trip information will be recorded as normal. The driving reason for trip-based reports will show as Business.
- B to C – the driver presses the center button on DriveMate to select privacy mode (last red LED illuminated). Position B, would have been recorded as part of Trip 1, which was in business mode. Driver feedback from DriveMate is not displayed whilst in privacy mode, and the card reader will not operate. Trip and event data continue to be recorded, but not accurate GPS positions. Read Position and event data during privacy mode below for the detail.
- C to D – the start of the trip will remain in privacy mode as the script retains the current mode even during power down. The trip will continue as per Trip 2 until the driver selects business mode. At the point at which business mode is selected, the OBC will start to record the remainder of the trip as per normal.
Position and event data during privacy mode
Trips and events are still recorded while in privacy mode. It is only the GPS position, and any event specifically configured to be suppressed in privacy mode, that are affected.
Position data
- FM devices send a placeholder position that plots above Africa (around 0°, 0°) for the duration of privacy mode, instead of the vehicle's real position.
- MiX 4000 devices repeat the last known position recorded before the vehicle entered privacy mode, for the duration of privacy mode.
Event data
Most events continue to be recorded as normal while in privacy mode. An event is only suppressed if it has been specifically configured with a trigger condition that requires privacy mode to be false (or DriveMate mode not equal to 3). This is a per-event configuration choice, not a default behavior.
